The New Hampshire School Administrators Association, in coordination with the American Association of School Administrators, has announced that Dr. Michael J. Martin is the New Hampshire Superintendent of the Year for 2009-10. Dr. Martin, who is Superintendent of Schools in SAU #46 (Merrimack Valley - Andover School Districts) will receive a special award during the National Conference on Education in Phoenix, Arizona in February 2010.
Dr. Martin was selected for this honor by a panel of his peers and from a distinguished group of nominees. Dr. David Longnecker, Chair of the School Board for School Administrative Unit #46 offered this praise with respect to Dr. Martin, “You will not find a superintendent who, over such a relatively brief time span, has accomplished more or had a greater impact on the students, the community, and the school districts he leads.”
State Representative and City Councilor Elizabeth Blanchard referred to Dr. Martin’s success in championing a district supported charter school, noting, “The results of his leadership are seen in the proud faces of the approximately 40 students who have since graduated from the CSI Charter School. A great deal of that is due to Mike’s leadership.”
Retired School Administrator Curt Sokness had this to say about Dr. Martin’s collaborative approach to district initiatives, “Mike is not a caretaker or keeper of the status quo. His tenure at SAU #46 has always been about student learning in ways that have changed the culture of that SAU.” Adds Mr. Sokness, “Mike goes about his work in a quiet and unassuming manner. He does not make himself the center of attention. These efforts are delegated to capable staff members and all are highly collaborative. But, everyone knows he is the catalyst…Mike personified what superintendents need to be doing in this time of major societal change.”
Mike began his educational training at Plymouth State College where he earned his Bachelor of Science in 1970 and a succession of advanced degrees after that, including a Master of Science in Education in 1973, a Master of Business Administration in 1979 and a D. Ed in 1989. Mike currently resides in Hopkinton, New Hampshire.
His educational career started in 1972 as an elementary school teacher and then principal at Campton Elementary School in Campton, New Hampshire. Mike assumed the role of School Business Administrator and Assistant Superintendent of Schools while at the White Mountains Regional School District from 1985 through 1990. He became Assistant Superintendent of Schools for School Administrative Unit #8 in Concord from 1990 through 1999. In 1999, Mike became Superintendent for School Administrative Unit #46 in Penacook where he has remained since.
The educational community has recognized Mike for his dedication and performance. Dr. Mark V. Joyce, Executive Director of NHSAA, noted, “Mike is a wonderful example of a true "Champion for Children", working tirelessly on behalf of the children and citizens of his communities.”
Congratulations, Mike, on this outstanding honor!
